Hush Support
Hush is a journal that keeps everything on your phone, with a companion that runs on the device. Most questions are answered below. For anything else, write to okohedeki@gmail.com and a person will answer, usually within two days.
Getting started
Where is my journal stored? On your iPhone or iPad, in Hush’s own protected storage. There is no account and no server. Deleting the app deletes the journal, so make a backup first if you want to keep it.
Does Hush work offline? Yes, every feature. The only times Hush talks to a server are Apple’s: buying, downloading the companion’s model, and, with Hush Plus, syncing through your own iCloud.
The companion says it isn’t on this phone yet. The companion’s model (about 1.3 GB) downloads after you finish setting up Hush. Settings > Companion shows its progress and lets you retry. Hush works as a journal while you wait. Older devices with little memory can’t run the model, and Hush says so there.
The companion
Why isn’t the companion doing anything? Everything the companion does with your pages is off until you turn it on, so a journal never reads along by surprise. Turn on what you want in Settings > Companion: notes in the margin, reply letters, the Sunday Edition, patterns in your landscape, and learning from new pages.
Can I stop it reading a page? Yes. Mark a page as private from the companion in the page’s menu. It is then never read, by any feature.
What does it learn, and can I change it? With “Learn from new entries” on, the companion may note up to two lasting things from a page. They appear under Memory in Settings, where you can edit or remove any of them. Nothing it learns leaves the phone.
A letter I sent never arrived. Letters are written on the phone, so if you locked it straight after sending, the reply is written the next time you open Hush, and still arrives for the morning it was promised. Letters are sealed until seven in the morning.
Purchases
What does the trial include? Everything in Hush, for seven days. When it ends, your pages stay yours: you can still read, search and export them. A single purchase of Hush unlocks writing and the companion for good. Nothing recurring.
What is Hush Plus? An optional subscription that adds Encrypted Sync between your devices and premium themes, fonts, worlds and stationery, with new ones every month. It comes as a monthly or a yearly plan, and the first month is free. Everything else in Hush is included in the one-time purchase, with or without Plus.
I bought Hush before. How do I get it back? Settings > Plan > Restore purchases, signed in to the App Store with the same Apple Account you bought it with.
How do I cancel Plus or ask for a refund? Subscriptions are managed by Apple: Settings app > your name > Subscriptions. Refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. When Plus ends, nothing is deleted: sync pauses and premium content stays on the phone where it is, unused until Plus is back.
Encrypted Sync (Hush Plus)
How does sync work? Your pages travel through your own iCloud, encrypted on your device with a key only your devices hold. Hush can’t read them, and neither can Apple. Turning it on makes a recovery key: keep it somewhere safe, because without it and without your devices, nobody can recover the journal.
Sync isn’t working. Check that iCloud Drive is on for Hush in the Settings app, that both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account, and that Plus is active. Settings > Encrypted Sync in Hush shows the last time it ran.
Privacy and safety
What do you collect? Nothing. Hush has no analytics, no accounts and no third-party code. The full policy is at the privacy policy page.
What happens if I write about hurting myself? Hush shows fixed, human-written text with ways to reach people who can help, and the companion generates nothing for that page. This check runs on the phone and tells no one. Hush is not a crisis service: if you are in danger, contact your local emergency number, or 988 in the US. The full protocol is on The AI in Hush.
Backups and leaving
How do I back up? Settings > Backups makes an encrypted backup file you can keep anywhere. Only your recovery key opens it.
How do I export my pages? Settings > Export writes your pages as plain text, with your moods and tags.
How do I delete everything? Delete the app. If you used Encrypted Sync, also remove Hush’s data under iCloud in the Settings app.
